Suhayl Essa

Suhayl Essa is a doctor with a funny bone. He began stand up comedy performing at club gigs across Gauteng. After a mere 2 shows he was introduced to a legend of South African comedy and thus became one of the opening acts for Riaad Moosa’s one man show: “Doctor’s Orders” in Lenasia, Gauteng. Suhayl utilises his experiences as a medical student, doctor and young muslim guy living in South African to shape a unique and witty delivery on his material that will leave you in stitches. Suhayl has featured on Comedy Central as well as Kagiso Lediga’s new show with Hugh Masakela: “The Bantu Hour”. He was invited to do a segment on ANN 7’s weekly sports wrap up show: Sin Bin. More recently, Suhayl has opened for Best Comic of the Year nominee Carvin Goldstone in Durban and became a finalist in the Comedy Central Grab the Mic competition at Parker’s Comedy Club in Monte Casino. Suhayl has made his mark on stages like the Space Theatre, The Box (Pop Art Theatre) with Goliath and Goliath, Kitcheners, Ozone in Soweto, Comedy at Mishmash Pretoria, Parkers Comedy Club and the Goliath Comedy club. Since then, he has performed across South Africa on stages in both Durban and Cape Town.v As a newcomer, he finds that comedy is a creative outlet to express himself and entertain people at the same time. In spite of his education, Suhayl Essa believes that laughter is the best medicine(not really) and speaking in third person is acceptable when creating a biography about oneself.
